Annual Report 2010-11

 

Participation in various Inter-collegiate events.

  1. 16 Volunteers participated in ‘Anubhuti’, inter-collegiate events’ held at Ruia College, on 3rd and 4th Dec 2010. They participated in Street play, Poetry, photography, elocution and Mono-acting. Brother Kalpesh Zunzunrao  won the second prize for poetry competition.
  2. 10 Volunteers participated in ‘Yuva Astra’, an intercollegiate event by SIWS college, wadala on 15th and 16th Dec 2010. They participated in Quiz, essay, Rangoli, Group singing Elocution and Debate.
  3. 15 Volunteers participated in ‘Udaant, an intercollegiate event by Khalsa College, Matunga on 15th and 16th Jan 2011. They participated in various competition like Debate, Elocution, essay, streetplay, rangoli and Powerpoint presentation. Group of Sis Priyanka Kothwale and Sis Ruchira Tipnis won first prize for power-point presentation.
  4. 20 volunteers participated in an intercollegiate event by Kirti College on 24th and 25th Jan 2011. They participated in different competition like Quiz, Storytelling, group dance and Rangoli. Bro. Suraj Ghimire won Third prize for Story Telling Competitions.

 

Other activities

  1. Volunteers Dhanashri Kolambkar and Preeti bhanushali trained girls at SNDT university state level camp.
  2. Our volunteers helped as demonstrators during various Govt disaster mock-drills at kalyan, Mokhada. These activities were carried out under observation of Ex District coordinator, Prof. D. G. Phondekar.
  3. Training was given to our volunteers by Ex volunteer Jagdish Rajane in December in the college as well as during our residential camp.
  4. Thirty volunteers attended a one day workshop on disaster management held at S. K. Somaiya college on 29th January, 2011. This workshop was under the Swayam Project taken by Nirmala Niketan .
  5. Courage building of tribal children was achieved through adventurous activities under guidance of volunteer Dhanashri Kolambkar, and Ex volunteer Jagdish Rajane.

 

Residential camp at Dahanu

The residential camp was organised between 16th – 22nd December, 2010 at Nareshwadi in Dahanu taluke of thne district.

Thirty volunteers of the first yeat have participated in the camp

The program officers of three colleges in Somaiya campus had a meeting at naresh wadi, dahanu with local authorities and it was planned to take chain camps in the month of December. Our camp was held in third week of December.

 

The objectives if the camp were

  1. Awareness of Tribal region to the Mumbai students
  2. Inculcation of skills like dignity of labour, public relationship, interpersonal communication etc.
  3. Observation of government rubber plantation project at Dapchari, Dahanu.
  4. Learning vermi-culture, and dairy activities at Nareshwadi.
  5. Assistance to tribal students in the academic routine and development of some skills through which the development of bridge between urban and rural youth
  6. Understanding about the social evils in the tribal community

 

In the filfillment of the goals following activities were conducted in the camp

Shramanubhav - Volunteers dug and widedned rigs aroud trees. Nearly 100 trees were covered.

Courage building of tribal children was achieved through adventurous activities ( rapling). About 100 school kids were benefitted.

 

Academic assistance to tribal students - Volunteers helped the school kids by giving them information about use of internet in interactive lectures.

 

Repair of lab computers - It was found that there were 60 PCs which were non-functional. Our volunteers took the task and repaired a few. This was then continued on week ends in the month of January and 20 computers are now functional. The principal of the school, shri. Pawar Sir has appreciated the efforts of our volunteers in a letter to our principal.

 

Awareness about social issues - Volunteers prepared five street plays covering various social issues like dowry, alcoholism, tobacco consumption health and hygiene and presented in the nearby hamlets like Haladipada, Dhundulwadi and Narashwadi hostel students.

 

Development of skills – students have organised exhibition and snake show in which snake handling was organised. For the development of courage, decision making, team building rappelling exercise was conducted for the Nareshwadi students.

 

Awareness lectures -

Lectures by Dr. Telange and shri. Prashant Savant were arranged.

Volunteers visited  nearby dam at kurze.

Volunteers observed vermiculture plant and dairy at wadi.

Exercises, cultural programs and group discussions were held every day. Each student was involved in cooking on at least one day and students enhanced their management skills,communication skills through the camp activities. Exposure to rural life has made them aware about social issues and of their responsibilities towards the society.

 

Various projects taken at the college level

  1. MKCL data entry : Like last year, the data entry of newly admitted students was made by NSS volunteers under the guidance of Asst. Librarian Samira Samant.
  2. A lecture on Drug abuse was organized in collaboration with Anti narcotic cell.
  3. Volunteers attended the independence day celebration
  4. Blood requirements are sudden events and our volunteers coordinated between donors and receivers on several occassios. Library staff Shri. Chavan, Prof. Yogesh ghalsasi, Few Ex volunteers and ex student and faculty Dr. Kaushal were helped in the emergency
  5. NSS volunteers helped in the promotion of the Competitive examination study circle initiated under prof. D. G. Phondekar in the college.
  6. Volunteers have participated in various other activities carried out in the college.

 

Community Projects

  • Disha Deepshikha : Project taken up by NSS in three wards of Mumbai for the benefit of teen agers deprived of school/college and specially girls. It was taken in collaboration with UNICEF, NAIR Hospital, MDACS and AAMRAI, an NGO. 125 volunteers from 10 colleges worked in this pilot project for 60 hours. They visited several Red Ribbon clubs and community organizations and carried out awareness of HIV/AIDS. Also a survey was carried out which will be used for micro planning. 20 volunteers were deployed from our college and their work has been appreciated.
  • Malaria awareness campaign : This rainy season, Mumbai fell victim to Malaria. A special campaign was carried out by GMMC in slum areas. 25 volunteers from our college have contributed in this campaign.
  • Yuvak Yuvati Mela : In collaboration with NSS , University of Mumbai and Akshara, a women research center, Our college organized a two day MELA in the Somaiya campus. It was visited by about 2300 youngsters from various colleges in Mumbai. The aim of the mela is to create awareness about gender equity and women empowerment through games.
  • Eye Donation awareness : 15 volunteers were involved in the campaigne and through their efforts over 300 persons were convinced and filled the pledge cards for eye donation.
  • Electricity Conservation and Note book recycling : These two projects were announced by the honourable vice chancellor and our college has already started both the projects. Both projects will take larger shape in next year.
  • Voter awareness campaign : The chief election Commissioner declared 25th January as Voters’ day. Our volunteers prepared a street play which was appreciated by Thane collectorate and volunteers were invited to perform in Thane. They presented 7 streetplays on one day at several venues from Thane city to Bhayander.
  • Volunteers also presented street play on “save water” during ganapati Utsav at several places in the community. Street plays were also performed on AIDS awareness, Gender Equity, Health, Drugs abuse, Alcohol addiction in the community.
  • A rapling activity was arranged at our tribal school at Naresh wadi and about 100 school kids were given the benefit. Few of our volunteers visited Naresh wadi on weekends in January and through their consistent efforts, about 20 computers have been made functional. These computers were non functional and therefore not available for the school kids earlier.
  • Blood Donation was organized in collaboration with Somaiya Hospital Blood bank in July, 2010 and 84 donors donated blood. All donors were tested for thallesemia minor. Volunteers also helped the needful persons throughout the year. Our Library staff Shri Chavan, Dr. Ghalsasi ( Dept of Chemistry) are few to name.
  • Two of our volunteers were selected for RD parade till zonal level selections but could not go further. Sis. Dhanashri Kolambkar contributed as trainer and Bro. Hardik Nayak, Bro. Sushant Chavan, Sis. Asmita Jadhav contributed as residential volunteers throughout the pre RD camp at Kalina Campus during 16-25 January.
  • Apart from these volunteers have participated un several university, intercollege  events.
  • Leadership Training camp : Three volunteers Bro. sagar Vidhate, Bro. Darshan Pandey and Sis. Pragati Gore participated in five day residential LTP camp held in September 2010 at Karjat. Program Officer was a resource person in the camp.
  • West Zone residential camp at Ratnagiri was attended by Bro. Suraj Ghimire and Sis. Pooja Nimbalkar. Camp was held during 26th Dec- 2nd January and theme of the camp was water conservation. Cleaning of the river at Golap was taken up by NSS volunteers.
  • A university level camp was held at neral in January and was attended by Sis. Poulomi Biswas.
  • Prizes won in Inter-college Competitions:
  • First prize in Power Point Presentation : Sis. Priyanka Kothavale and Sis. Ruchira Tipnis at  Khalsa  college.
  • Second prize in Poetry : Bro. Kalpesh Zunjarrao in “Anubhuti”, at Ruia college.

 

Third prize in story telling : Bro. Suraj Ghimire at Kirti College.
