About Department
The Department of Economics is one of the major departments in the institute, with the subject being offered at the UG level. It caters to both the Arts and commerce streams. Business Economics is a core/compulsory subject in the commerce faculty. Economics is an elective subject for first and second year BA students and can be opted for as a specialization in the final year of the Bachelor of Arts.
The Department of Economics has adopted a proactive and rigorous approach in the curriculum delivery of the subject so as to cater to the needs of the diverse student community.
The department aims to impart an empirical knowledge base to the students and develop their analytical skills. With this end in view, the department offers learning experiences through guest lectures, workshops, career guidance sessions and so on. The department also offers placement and internship opportunities for interested students. The department has an active ‘Economics Club‘ which conducts activities to impart various skills in preparing students for jobs.

Syllabus
Bachelor of Arts (Economics)
The undergraduate and graduate program of Bachelor of Arts in Economics trains, mentors, and prepares students with employability and vocational skills to achieve their career goals in economics, research, and finance. The program follows the choice-based credit system of the University of Mumbai, spanning six semesters. Students grasp the concepts, applications, and nuances of core economics branches, namely microeconomics, macroeconomics, public finance, the Indian economy, economic thought, growth and development theories, and international economics.
True to the department’s belief in catering to diverse student needs, interests, aptitudes, and career pursuits, more optional papers are offered at the graduate level. Students can choose between Research Methodology or Quantitative Economics and further opt for either Econometrics or Environmental Economics. Activities and tasks designed for curriculum enrichment by faculty members provide an engaging learning environment. This is complemented by co-curricular and extension activities conducted by the department, enhancing students' learning experience and career preparedness.
The course provides a comprehensive and applied understanding of economic theories and their real-world implications, focusing on development issues. Covering microeconomic principles, macroeconomics, development economics, financial systems, quantitative analysis, econometrics, research methodologies, international economics, and international finance, the curriculum offers an in-depth exploration of economic phenomena. Through theoretical knowledge and practical applications, students develop analytical skills and insights to interpret and contribute to economic development.
Bachelor of Commerce
In the Bachelor of Commerce program, Economics is a compulsory core paper under the CBCS of the University of Mumbai across all the six semesters.
